Teaching and Mentorship

I have always seen teaching as part of my calling as a calligrapher. I enjoy holding in-person classes in my studio and I also travel overseas to conferences and local groups. I work in many countries and have continuing relationships with students, particularly in North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. I also teach a small number of online courses.

Ewan reveals what has made his own approach to calligraphy distinctive in a series of talks which will inspire and evoke expansive perspectives for the audience - artists, historians, and the curious alike.

Blackletter for Calligraphers

January 13 & 14, 2024

Using a collection of manuscript fragments belonging to Ewan’s studio participants will analyse and write several blackletter hands, Textura and Rotunda.

Foundations in Calligraphy: 1

Suitable for beginners as well as those with considerable experience, this course 8-week course teaches the foundations of calligraphy, roman-upper and lower-case letterforms, and an introduction to materials and tools.

Foundations in Calligraphy: 2

Suitable for beginners with a basic understanding of materials (inks, writing surfaces & tools), as well as those with considerable experience, this 3-week course teaches italic letterforms, continuing with materials and tools.

Calligraphy Mentorship

Calligraphy mentorship can take the form of a one-off session, simply to chat over where you are, or to look at a particular piece of work; or you could register for a package of from three to six sessions spread over time as you develop a project.

Somatic Coaching

Somatic coaching is based on the concept that the body and mind are an interconnected complex, which serves the new life that that wants to come forward for you at this time. It is not counselling or a talking therapy, but rather works with what is felt in the body as you address a particular issue. This is learning and growing by doing, not just thinking.
