Roman Capitals
In Person and In Depth
Suitable for advanced beginners as well as those with considerable experience, this 7-week course looks at roman capital letterforms through a personalised lense. Alongside this we will also look at the paper, inks, quills and what I think of as the fundamentals of calligraphy.
About the course
Roman capital letterforms are the seeds of the english language alphabet we know today. Participants will have a variety of samples from which to choose from, and then be guided by Ewan to help in understanding the forms in such a way that they become their own. This promotes deep learning and maximum diversity. Sessions will include themes that are common across forms: proportion, weight, pen angle, spacing, line quality, flow in movement, the beginnings and ending of strokes, the text block, core forms. Woven within the letterform study there will be attention to materials and tools, and project assignments. Students are expected to complete an additional one day of home-work. Limited places. The course is suitable for advanced beginners with a basic understanding of materials (inks, writing surfaces & tools), as well as those with considerable experience. The benefit of a course such as this comes from having a concentrated period of time devoted to growing one's calligraphic skills. There are also a limited number of places for advanced students to audit the course whilst working on their own projects.
